In an age of globalization and a borderless world, TMI Associates has been providing Chinese legal services ever since its establishment in 1990. To meet the needs of Japanese clients investing in China, on top of providing services to settle legal issues, we also provide comprehensive support services covering entry into the Chinese market, establishment of compliance frameworks for local companies, business restructuring, negotiations with local associated companies, business partners and public agencies, al l while utilizing the expertise we have accumulated over our 25 years of practice. We provide services in every corporate legal field, including services relating to direct investment, international trade, M&A, business restructuring, intellectual property rights, anti-monopoly filings and labor disputes. We can also handle any related arbitration or litigation. Furthermore, we actively provide legal services to Chinese companies, which have been increasingly investing in Japan in recent years, Japanese companies based in China, as well as the Chinese embassy and consulates in Japan.

The Chinese Practice Group is the largest of any Japanese law firm, and it has established a system capable of responding promptly to clients’ needs in all fields of Chinese legal services, seamlessly providing services for cross-border cases between Japan and China in cooperation with the Shanghai Office (established in 1998) and the Beijing Office (established in 2012).

Since Eizo took part in the establishment of our Shanghai Office in Shanghai, China in 1998, he has dealt with numerous legal matters to date, including advising Japanese companies on their expansion into China as well as M&A transactions, corporate legal issues and investment projects in China. Toyo is licensed as both a patent attorney in Japan and an attorney-at-law in California. He supports clients in patent prosecution, patent licensing/sales and litigation, drawing on his legal and business acumen acquired through significant experience both in-house and at law firms. Toyo works in close collaboration with TMI’s Chinese professionals.

The Chinese Practice Group consists of more than a dozen specialists in Chinese law, including Chinese attorneys who are fluent in Japanese and have extensive experience in providing Chinese legal services to Japanese clients, as well as Japanese attorneys who are familiar with Chinese law and translators and staff members who are fluent in Chinese. The Chinese Practice Group provides Chinese legal services in Japan in cooperation with Japanese attorneys who are familiar with our clients’ needs and the business practices of their industries.

The Chinese Practice Group has established a system for enabling clients to have consultations and prepare documents relating to Chinese law at the Tokyo Office, in order to respond to our clients’ needs as promptly as possible.

In addition, we have established a system which allows us to respond to all of our clients’ needs accurately and at a reason able cost by utilizing our extensive network of administrative agencies, law firms, accounting firms and research companies throughout China, as well as our offices in Shanghai and Beijing when handling cases that require services to be provided in China. We take pride in the knowledge that it is only TMI Associates that has been able to establish such a network, and we believe that this is a reflection of our early entry into China and our extensive experience in handling cases in the country.

In recent years, we have provided services to a number of Chinese companies expanding their businesses into Japan.
