In 1995, TMI established a qualified joint venture with a French law firm, Gide Loyrette Nouel, under the Act on Special Measures concerning the Handling of Legal Services by Foreign Lawyers. This was succeeded by a foreign law joint enterprise with Laurent Dubois Foreign Law Office from 1999 to March 2007, with the purpose of providing support to companies doing business in both Japan and France.
In 2008, the French Desk, staffed by an attorney qualified to practice law in France, was set up in TMI’s Tokyo Office to offer assistance in a diverse range of fields to Japanese clients in their business operations in France.
A large number of Japanese companies have business bases in France, including local subsidiaries, branches, and representative offices, and they continue to make active investment and establish business alliances. Japan was ranked fifth in foreign direct investment in France in 2017. (Source: Business France statistics)
The importance of France to Japanese companies is expected to be further enhanced as a result of the effects of the UK’s exit from the EU at the end of March 2019.
In October 2014, TMI assigned a Japanese lawyer (qualified to practice French law) to ALTANA, a law firm in Paris, France. She is responsible for advising on business issues involving Japanese and French companies in cooperation with the Tokyo Office’s French Desk.
