Shanghai Office

Among Asian countries, China recently stands out because of its remarkable economic growth, especially in Shanghai. China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) contributed greatly to changes in the Chinese legal infrastructure; new laws and ordinances were quickly established and are continually revised. Responding to the increasing legal demand in China, TMI opened a representative office in Shanghai on April 6, 1998, after receiving formal permission from the Chinese Ministry of Justice.

The Shanghai office provides the following legal services pursuant to the Ordinance Concerning Management of Foreign Law Offices with Representative Branches in China:

legal consulting and advice for expanding business in the Chinese market, including preparing legal documents for business expansion (e.g. statement of expansion intentions and joint venture contracts), support for procedures and negotiations with relevant Chinese governmental departments and offices, and support for negotiations with relevant Chinese parties;
resolution of various legal issues, employment matters, debt collection, and various legal disputes relating to business management in China;
support for local restructuring, withdrawals, and M&A;
assistance with assigning matters to Chinese lawyers and with contacting Chinese lawyers;
gathering information on Chinese laws and ordinances;
support for Chinese companies entering the Japanese market;
providing legal services in China relating to Japanese laws; and
processing of various external matters in China.

The Shanghai office also has an alliance with three Chinese law firms and a network of many experienced Chinese lawyers, allowing us to provide our clients with appropriate and prompt solutions to their legal matters. Furthermore, with the strong ties between the Shanghai office and our Chinese team in the Tokyo office, we can provide efficient cross-border legal services meeting each of our clients' needs.
