TMIは、2025年8月20日（水）から3日間、パシフィコ横浜で開催された第9回アフリカ開発会議（TICAD9）の併設イベント「TICAD Business Expo & Conference (Japan Fair)」にブースを初出展しました。初日には、アフリカで日本企業の法務支援に当たる平林拓人弁護士がセッションに登壇し、日本企業が進出する際の具体的な法的課題などについて意見を交わしました。

TMIは2015年に日本の法律事務所として初めてアフリカに拠点（ケニア現地デスク）を設置し、日本人弁護士を常駐させてリーガルサービスを提供しています。東アフリカ最大の法律事務所であるAnjarwalla& Khanna LLP（A&K）と強固な連携のもと、アフリカの30ヵ国以上の案件を手掛けてきました。取り扱い案件の内容は現地法人・支店の設立やM&A、税務、労務など、企業活動に関連する幅広い法分野に及んでいます。
TICADへのブース出展を通じて、より多くの日本企業のアフリカ進出や現地での事業活動を後押ししていきます。

■セッションの内容

1日目には株式会社Kasai&CompanyとAsia Africa Investment Consulting Nigeria Ltd、TMIの実務家3名が「10年の現地経験で読み解くアフリカ進出ストーリー〜弁護士・ 会計士・ファンドマネージャーが語る、フェーズ別実務〜」をテーマにセッションしました。TMIからは平林拓人弁護士が登壇。会場は立ち見が出るほどの盛況ぶりでした。
平林弁護士は「アフリカでは、どのリスクを取り、どのリスクは取らないのか適切に判断しながら、粘り強く法的課題を乗り越えていくことが重要」と、現地で長年リーガルサービスを提供してきた経験から指摘しました。

■TICAD概要

1993年から日本政府が主導し、国連と国連開発計画、世界銀行、アフリカ連合委員会と共同で開催しているアフリカの開発をテーマとした国際会議です。
9回目の開催となる今回は、石破茂内閣総理大臣が共同議長を務めたほか、アフリカ49ヵ国の代表や日本の国会議員、民間企業や国際機関の代表らが出席しました。

TMI Associates set up a booth for the first time at the “Japan Fair” of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD)

TMI Associates (“TMI”) set up a booth for the first time at the “TICAD Business Expo & Conference (Japan Fair),” an event within the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), held at Pacifico Yokohama over three (3) days starting on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. On the first day, Takuto Hirabayashi, Partner (Attorney), who provides legal support to Japanese companies in Africa, spoke at a session and exchanged views on specific legal challenges faced by Japanese businesses entering the African market.

In 2015, TMI became the first Japanese law firm to establish a base in Africa (Kenya Local Desk), providing legal services through Japanese attorneys stationed there. In close collaboration with Anjarwalla & Khanna LLP (A&K), the largest law firm in East Africa, TMI has handled cases involving more than thirty (30) African countries. The scope of the cases handled includes a wide range of legal fields related to corporate activities, such as the establishment of local subsidiaries and branches, M&A, and matters concerning taxation and labor.

By participating in TICAD with a booth, TMI aims to support more Japanese companies in expanding into Africa and conducting business activities there.

Session Highlights

On the first day, three practitioners from Kasai & Company, Asia Africa Investment Consulting Nigeria Ltd, and TMI held a session entitled “Decoding Africa Market Entry Based on 10 Years of Local Experience: Lawyer, Accountant, and Fund Manager Discuss Phase-Specific Practice.” Representing TMI, Partner (Attorney), Hirabayashi took the stage. The session was so well attended that there was standing room only.

Drawing on his many years of experience providing legal services in the region, Attorney Hirabayashi noted: “In Africa, it is essential to make appropriate judgments about which risks to take and which to avoid, and to persistently overcome legal challenges.”

About TICAD

TICAD is an international conference on African development that has been hosted by the Japanese Government since 1993 and is co-hosted with the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and the African Union Commission.

At its ninth edition, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba served as co-chair, and the conference was attended by representatives from forty-nine (49) African countries, members of Japan’s National Diet, as well as representatives of and international organizations.
